Each piece reflects the discipline and technique of the atelier tradition—careful observation, refined draftsmanship, and a commitment to capturing the essence of the subject. Offered at a special rate during this period of study, the series provides collectors with a rare opportunity to own an early work from a rising artist as he transitions from student to professional.
Currently finishing his studies at the prestigious Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Frank Fetrow is part of a new generation of classically trained figurative artists. His work reflects a strong command of anatomy, form, and light—hallmarks of the traditional atelier method—while capturing the subtle character and presence of each subject.
Even as a student, Frank’s talent is already being recognized. His portrait work was recently selected for the Almenara Collection 2025 competition, placing him among emerging artists to watch.

Choosing the Right Photo
For the most expressive portrait, choose a photograph that feels natural and unposed. Look for quiet, authentic moments—times when the subject is unaware of the camera, lost in thought, or simply being themselves. Photos with direct smiling “toward-camera” poses often feel staged and can limit the emotional depth of the final drawing, so more candid moments tend to work best.
Equally important is the technical quality of the photo. Select an image that is sharp, well-lit, and free of heavy filters. Soft natural light—such as light from a window—creates gentle shadows that help define the structure of the face. Avoid photos that are dark, blurry, pixelated, or overly edited, as these make it harder to capture accurate detail in charcoal.
